This term refers to treatment of all the problems of the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Each tooth is embedded in the bone, strongly attached by a series of structures that ensure their strength and smooth operation.
Sometimes, the structures that surround and support the teeth (gums and bone), are affected significantly. This triggers a continuous degenerative process that progresses slowly, reaching an advanced stage in which the tooth moves over and end up “falling.”
Before this happens, the teeth go through several distinct stages, from a mildly affected until advanced stages of tooth loss. This process is called periodontists, and is popularly known as “pyorrhea”.
What are the causes?
The main cause is an infection caused by different types of bacteria. Most of these bacteria are found in normal circumstances the mouth of any individual, but some people have a defense system that is not effective against them, that is when the infection occurs. Gradually, these harmful bacteria are eroding the gum and bone, so that the teeth are increasingly weakened.
