So warned the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) from Belgium, coinciding with the launch of the fifth edition of the Atlas, with the most recent figures and the global day of the disease.

These statistics translate into roughly three new cases are diagnosed every ten seconds or nearly ten million per year and in 2030, one in 10 adults suffer this disease. The IDF also estimates that 183 million people are unaware they have it.

“In some of the poorest regions of the world such as Africa, where infectious diseases have traditionally been the focus of the health care system, cases of diabetes are expected to increase by 90%” this year, IDF said in a statement. He added that at least 78% of patients in Africa are not diagnosed and are unaware that they live with this condition.

According to figures from the federation, 80% of people with diabetes live in low-and middle-income and the highest number of people affected is between 40 and 59. In addition, 78 000 children develop type 1 diabetes each year.

“In all countries and communities around the world, we are losing the battle against this cruel and deadly disease,” said Jean Claude Mbanya, president of the IDF, in Belgium.

“We want the World Diabetes Day 2011, take these facts alarming to the center of world attention. We demand that the public and global leaders take immediate action,” he said.

The disclosure of these figures came after the UN meeting on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) held in New York in September with the participation of 193 heads of state. Diabetes is one of these conditions in some countries, calls for more action to combat it.
The World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14 and the campaign held on this date worldwide is conducted by the IDF and its member associations.

Even this anniversary was established in 1991 by the Federation and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the health hazards imposed by this disease.

Although not ban any foods from the different groups, it is necessary to control the amount, for this, the help of endocrinologist, nutritionist and dietitian is essential, never overlook.

Moreover, it is noteworthy that one of the tricks that all patients with diabetes have up his sleeve is the intake of dietary fiber, because, as I described earlier, slows the absorption of carbohydrates.

But it should be clear that this does not mean they can be eaten without limit sugary drinks, sweets and desserts, this is only an aid that the patient has at its disposal.

Note that it is very important to keep your blood sugar levels as close to normal levels to prevent the disease is complicated and decrease their quality of life, for it only requires four components: diet, constant glucose measurement, medicine and sports. Just a matter of work a little and not feel limited.

If you have diabetes is normal to have doubts about what foods to eat for your blood sugar level is maintained at normal levels. Martirice not think you have to starve yourself, the secret is in the amount and combination meals.

Dieting does not mean they should ignore the natural signals of hunger that sends the body, but to adopt a healthy diet that suits the needs of each individual. Therefore, it is necessary to listen to your body and recognize when it is hungry at what point has been met.

The previous recommendation is especially important for those with diabetes, otherwise you eat and are given drugs to control blood sugar levels, they may fall below normal limits, which results in loss of consciousness.

As we know, this disease is characterized by increased glucose in the bloodstream because the body no longer produces insulin (a hormone that is responsible for distributing sugar to the liver and muscles), a condition called type 1, or if the substance is secreted in small quantities and their action is weak (type 2).

There is a list of foods that are absolutely prohibited, all in smaller portions, may be included in your meal plan. Note that if you prohibit certain food will feel robbed and angry, which will only eat them without control, so you need to consider that products and food that increase your blood sugar will be consumed in increasing quantities small, combined with other foods and coordinated with changes in medication doses or exercise.

Carbohydrates

They consist of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, and were classified as simple and complex. The first is characterized by sweet, are digested quickly and immediately enter the blood, therefore, give us instant energy. In turn, are divided into monosaccharides (eg glucose, fructose and galactose, whose main sources are honey, fruit, milk and juice) and disaccharides (sucrose, maltose and lactose, found in refined sugar, milk, beer and jams).

The complex calls are not sweet, take longer to digest and, therefore, their passage into the blood is slow, among them are the oligosaccharides (maltotriose and dextrins, contained, for example, sports energy drinks or biscuits) and polysaccharides, which in turn are divided into starchy foods (starch and starch present in potatoes, sweet potatoes, cereals, pasta, bread and bananas) and fibrous (so called cellulose, lignin and pectin, rice, tortilla, wheat bran and oat , apples and green vegetables, etc.).

You should consider that carbohydrates must always be present in the body, as well as provide power, allow the “savings” of protein to build and repair muscles. It is necessary to constitute 60% of the daily diet, whether it be directed to athletes, people with diabetes, breastfeeding women or children, but should review the support it receives to make sure the amount your body tolerates.

Fruits and vegetables

It is very important to eat fruits and vegetables every day since, besides providing vitamins, minerals and fiber, the majority are naturally low in fat, sugar and sodium when consumed as an input or snack will make you feel satisfied, so it will be less likely to overeat.

It is recommended that you eat 100 to 150 grams of vegetables such as spinach, celery, eggplant, watercress, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, asparagus, spinach, lettuce, radish, carrot, pumpkin, onion, sprouts, mushrooms, beans, artichoke and garlic.

The amount of fruit is approximately 100 grams, of which there is great variety, for example, peach, plum, strawberry, pomegranate, kiwi, lemon, tangerine, apple, peach, melon, quince, orange, pear, watermelon, cherries, figs, persimmons and grapes.

Fiber

It is the part of plants that humans can not digest, it is not absorbed, there are two types: insoluble and soluble. The first does not dissolve in water and acts like a broom, and that helps clean the intestinal walls, with foods that contain it are fruit and vegetable skins, whole grain breads and cereals.

The soluble is vital in controlling glucose levels because it leaves the stomach slowly and this causes those who consume to feel full longer, besides, making the absorption of carbohydrates is slower. It is found in beans, oats and barley and some fruits and vegetables.

Fats

Following moderate-fat diet is beneficial for people with diabetes, helping the digestion is slower, controls the amount of glucose and causes it to feel full after small meal or snack. The tricky part is knowing how much is needed for individuals who have the disease, nutrition specialists consider that consumption should not exceed two tablespoons a day.

As part of the diet low in fat, it is important to prefer those that protect the heart, as so-called omega-3 and omega-9 and monounsaturated fats, found in olive and walnut oils, salmon, sardines, beans soybean and spinach.

Meat

As we know, the meat we provide protein, folic acid and iron, no reason to suppress their intake, the important thing is to remove all the fat and consume 2 to 3 times a week alternating between the red (beef, lamb, goat and pig) and white (chicken, fish and rabbit).

Each serving should weigh between 150 and 200 grams, and should always be served with a garnish of vegetables and beans also have to consider that the portion of meat can be replaced by an equal weight of liver, 200 grams and 250 grams of squid mussels.

For the person with diabetes is very important information about diet to follow, because it depends on the control of the disease. Learn about the sugar content of fruit, to establish an appropriate system and healthy.

One of the first questions is who has diabetes is, what I eat and what not it, because it is important to know how to control blood glucose (70 to 100 milligrams in 100 milliliters). The goal is to keep this material as close as possible to normal levels, which is accomplished by developing a diet that meets the needs of each case.

In addition to the restrictions on the use of sugar is concerned, it is important that the patient keep a close to ideal weight, because obesity is directly related to the presence of glucose, that is, the more weight you have, the greater the body’s need to eat sugar, so diets should be designed to control weight, while keeping the patient better nourished as possible.

In this sense, foods like fruits are not entirely forbidden, as an important part for the proper functioning of the nervous system and the production of energy, vitamins, minerals and fiber. The point is when to eat and how much, the whole fruit, for example, more satisfying than the juice, which becomes an excellent option for those who need to lose weight.

Thus, consumption of fruits can be combined, and something very important: try to eat fresh and never with sugar. Below is a list of specified daily amount of some fruits, you see that there are many who can switch their consumption to not be deprived of its flavor, keep good weight and excellent health.

Cherries (raw) ½ cup.
Plum (raw, medium), two pieces.
Peach, one or 3 / 4 cup.
Strawberries (raw, whole), a cup and 1 / 4.
Granada, half of one.
Figs (raw), 1 / 2 cup.
Kiwi (large), a piece.
Tangerine, 3 / 4 cup.
Mango (small), half of one.
Apple (raw), a piece.
Melon, half a piece.
Orange, half of one.
Papaya, a cup.
Pera, a piece or 1 / 2 cup.
Pineapple (raw), 1 / 2 cup.
Banana, 1 / 2 cup.
Watermelon (diced), a cup and 1 / 4.
Grapefruit half into chunks.
Grapes (small), 15 pieces.
In the case of dried fruit, they can also be eaten, then we provide the recommended daily amount for the patient with diabetes to eat them without any negative effects:

Raisins or prunes, two tablespoons.
Plum (medium), three pieces.
Dates (medium), two pieces and 1 / 2.
Figs, one-piece 1 / 2.
Apples, four slices.
For the person who has diabetes, diet is a mainstay for the preservation of good health. So if this is the case do not forget, besides the aforementioned fruits, integrate its food system to provide it with carbohydrates (in balance) and fiber, like whole wheat bread, grains (rice, corn, wheat, rye and more) , pasta and cereal.

The physician should tailor each diet taking into account the specific needs of the individual, since the objective is, first, maintain a weight that is close to ideal and, second, to control glucose levels in the body, so avoid any risk because of diabetes.

There is evidence that there is a close relationship between this disease and overweight. This is another reason why we should care for our food and is one of the diseases we can prevent if we follow a healthy balanced diet, and of course, if we lead a healthy life.

This disease is chronic, meaning that sufferers must live with diabetes for the rest of their lives. And eventually you get to learn what foods for diabetics, which are generally forbidden and must adopt eating habits that are compatible with the disease.

Fats are very harmful to diabetics and should be avoided, if possible completely eliminate from the diet. For that, you can replace meat with lean cuts of meat, remove skin from poultry, always eating low-fat dairy and complete eradication of sausages.

The fibers are essential to maintaining a healthy diet, and in the case of diabetics even more. Foods rich in fiber are fruits and vegetables, legumes such as beans and whole grains.

Before giving a list of foods for diabetics have to say that it is very important to limit the use of salt, avoid alcohol and to the extent possible, any drink or soft drink containing sugar. Sugar can be replaced by sweeteners, but always with great caution and moderation.

Many men and women with diabetes are going to cheer this news. Because their disease is not necessarily just with sex. Up to 70% of men and 62% of women of middle age or older affected by this pathology have sex two or three times a month. It is often the same people who claim to have the same years but without this disease.

Lindu Stacy Tessler of the University of Chicago (USA), is lead author of a study called Project is part of the National Life, Health and Aging. It has involved 1,993 adults aged 57 to 85 years.

“The sexual problems may be a sign of diabetes or a consequence of it that is often associated with depression, lack of adherence to treatment and relationship problems. Studies of sexuality and suffering from diabetes have been conducted with small samples of patients, not including over 65 years. However, data are needed based on a larger number of patients to specialists understand how sexual functioning in people diagnosed with the disease or not, “say the authors in the last” Diabetes Care. This is one reason why Dr. Tessler has conducted this research in the “that provide specific data on the activity and behavior and sexual problems of middle-aged and older,” he says. Scientists conducted surveys on sexuality (frequency of intercourse with a partner or masturbation, sex problems, ability to achieve orgasm, among others). Also investigated the health status of participants or the type of drugs consumed. We also performed a blood test to establish whether they had diabetes or not. “Based on a blood test found that 47% of men had diabetes. 25% were aware of having the disease while 22% had not yet been diagnosed. Also, almost 40% of women suffered (half had been diagnosed and the other half), “say the authors.

The data show that “although the disease is associated with high sexual inactivity, those affected who do have sex they do it with frequency and behavior in their relationships similar to that of healthy people,” reads the essay. Despite this good news, the authors also found that the disease, nevertheless affects the desire and the rewards of sexual activity. Thus, men diagnosed with diabetes were more likely to express a lack of interest in sex and experience erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation than healthy. Recognized diabetic women to refuse sex due to problems like low libido or difficulty achieving orgasm. They (almost half) that consult further with the doctor their sexual problems. They, in contrast, suffer in silence: only one out of five said the specialist.

The study refers to masturbation. “Adults with diabetes tend to practice less than those without the disease.” For the authors of the research is relevant to “the high prevalence of ED in those diagnosed with diabetes (55%), and those affected still had no medical opinion (40.5%) compared with healthy men (32%) . “Not having a diagnosis of diabetes protects individuals from the psychological burden and stigma of the disease. The high prevalence of difficulties with orgasm in people aware of their disease suggests that they have a predominantly physical. Erectile dysfunction and the loss of sexual interest in men with medical opinion may be partly due to the psychological burden of diabetes, the authors determined. For them it is “essential that physicians ask their patients with diabetes and their sex life, especially for women. Attention to potentially treatable sexual problems in middle age and older improve their quality of life and adherence to treatment, “concludes the paper.

Drinking coffee in moderation during middle age may reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly, says a new study.
Researchers in Finland and Sweden, examined the records of people who drank coffee-drinking habits were recorded in 1409 when at maturity.

Those who drank three to five cups of coffee per day at maturity are much less likely had developed Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in monitoring or controlling more than two decades later, the researchers said in the January issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

“Given the large amount of coffee consumption worldwide, these findings may have important implications for preventing or delaying the emergence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Miia Kivipelto, researcher at the University of Kuopio, Finland and the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, said in a press release.

“The findings must be confirmed by other studies, but it leaves open the possibility that dietary intervention can modify the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. They may also assist in developing new therapies for this disease.”

The researchers took into account that previous studies have shown that coffee increases cognitive performance, and it seems that caffeine reduces the risk of Parkinson’s disease.

The researchers say that the coffee did not know how to provide protection against dementia, but the coffee has also been linked with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, dementia risk factors.

effect may have something to do with coffee as an antioxidant capacity of blood. The study also showed that the tea was not associated with reduced risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
