An estimated 15 million snorers in Britain and the problem is often caused by mouth breathing, because breathing in air pressure causes the tissue in the back of the mouth (the soft palate ) to vibrate, giving rise to snoring.

Being overweight or obesity worsens the problem because the excess fat around the neck, causes the airways to constrict more than normal when you lie down.

Over a long period, snoring can lead to health problems, since these episodes periodically reduce the oxygen increases the risk of hypertension, stroke, diabetes and heart disease.

Snorers tend to use devices from plastic clips to stick in nasal strips to open the airway.

But these can fail because they can not get to the bottom of the soft palate, uvula or bell which vibrates and makes noise.

Doctors can use a laser or scalpel to cut the uvula, so that it does not vibrate, but recovery is very painful and can take weeks. It is difficult to eat and drink for some time afterward and operating costs are around £ 2,000 in private and not always work.

But now a new pain treatment that involves injecting the chemicals soft palate tissue and burn as it heals, scar tissue forms can not vibrate.
