Pay attention: the improper use of contact lenses or eye injury can cause fungal keratitis, an eye infection that if not treated, can cause other disorders, including blindness.
The eyes are very delicate organs that must be cared for with great care. Among the many diseases that can seriously affect the point of endangering the vision is fungal keratitis (ie, inflammation of the cornea that comes from a fungus).

The cornea, of course, is the curve layer, transparent and above the eye that protects the iris, which is what gives color to the eyes (brown or brown, green, blue, etc..) And the pupil (the point black located in the center of the iris, which is the opening where the light penetrates into the eye).

Although other types of keratitis (caused by bacteria, parasites like amoebas or injury, for example), fungal keratitis is an infection of the cornea, caused by a fungus, usually by a fungus called Fusarium, typically found in land, water and plants, especially in warm climates. If superficial keratitis affects the layers near the surface of the cornea and, when cured, no scars, but it is profound, affecting the inner layers of the cornea, and possibly scarring that can reach affect the eyes, depending on your location.

Fungal keratitis can occur for different reasons:

- It often occurs after an injury to the cornea, especially if caused by any plant material that enters the eye (as may occur if you take a blow to the eye with a large branch). This is the main cause, so be careful if you work in the garden. A pair of goggles is most convenient.
- There are risks of developing it if you wear contact lenses. To minimize these risks, you should not wear lenses for long periods of time. When you clean, do not forget to rub and rinse thoroughly and replace the box frequently. In general, you must follow exactly the instructions of the ophthalmologist or practitioner treating your eyes.
- Also, people with chronic or recurrent disease on the surface of the eye are more susceptible to fungal keratitis, as well as those with a weakened immune system if exposed to the fungus.

Vitamin D is a vital nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium. It is found in sources such as fish, fortified milk and eggs. Deficiency of this vitamin can cause skeletal deformities in children and weakness of muscles and bones in adults. Populations at high risk of vitamin D deficiency include the elderly, babies fed exclusively on breast milk, pregnant women and people with little exposure to the sun. There is strong scientific evidence that vitamin D may help reduce the risk of diseases such as psoriasis and rickets.

It is known that vitamin D insufficiency may lead to, or associated with, COPD, chronic renal failure, diabetes, heart failure, inflammatory bowel disease and osteoporosis. According to clinical research, adolescents with low vitamin D are at greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Supplementation with vitamin D may help prevent or treat vitamin D deficiency.

In a recent study, researchers evaluated 182 patients who had recently experienced COPD complications, including decreased immune response and lung inflammation. The team collected data on the rate of complications, hospitalizations and quality of life both before and after supplementation with vitamin D.
The scientists found that vitamin D supplements do not appear to reduce complications associated with COPD in most patients. However, people with severe vitamin D deficiency at baseline benefit most from supplementation.

The researchers concluded that vitamin D supplementation can reduce the risk of complications for patients with COPD with severe deficiency of vitamin D. More research is needed.

COPD is a type of lung disease that involves damage au obstruction of the airways of the lungs, making breathing difficult. “COPD” is a general term that refers to a group of chronic lung disease. The most common are chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and in some cases, asthma or asthmatic bronchitis. While chronic bronchitis and emphysema can occur separately, it is common that patients have both diseases simultaneously. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC, for its acronym in English) indicate that COPD affects 24 million Americans, according to the American Lung Association, is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Patients with COPD often die due to complications such as severe lung infections, heart problems or lung cancer.

Another common problem that can have children on the mouth is caused by the pacifier or thumb sucking. This habit is normal up to two years and may extend a little, but if after five years of age the child does not change this behavior, then you should seek help as it can cause serious problems in the normal development of teeth and mouth in general.

Something similar happens when you swallow. Some children push the teeth with your tongue when swallowed and do so repeatedly, they’ll run slower instead. This can cause them to bite problems that are then more difficult to correct. If you notice your child this happens, it’s best to consult a speech therapist, who is a specialist in speech problems, to help your child to correct these mistakes and learn to put the language well.

The tongue and teeth each have a special role in the mouth, which helps both speech and digestion. It is therefore important oral health care for children from early childhood. And so you can start right now, some simple care you can have with your children include:

- Wipe clean the teeth every day. At first, when they are smaller do it by rubbing gently with a clean and wet washcloth, and then when baby teeth are already larger, use a toothbrush for children.
If your child is under two years old, do not use toothpaste for oral hygiene instead, use only water.
Do not let the children fall asleep with a bottle in his mouth, which can cause what is known as “baby bottle tooth decay.”

- Encourage older children to eat low-sugar snacks like fruit, cheese and vegetables and avoid sticky, chewy candy them.

- Teach them how to brush their teeth and the importance of keeping clean.

And do not forget to take them to the dentist (the dentist) often, as should you. Do not expect them to be “bigger” and that care should be practiced when they are babies. Most pediatric dentists will agree that regular dental care should begin by one year of age, with a dental checkup twice a year for most children, although some children may need more frequent evaluations and care. Do you already have scheduled the next visit?

Each body part has a particular function and the mouth is no exception. Each component in it has a reason and support, for example, to participate in speech and digestion. Thus, the teeth are one of the main parts for the proper development of these processes, so it is important to care at birth.

Oral health begins in childhood. That is, almost since the baby comes into this world. At birth, the first set of teeth is almost fully formed, and although at first look, as they are “hiding” under the gums.

These first teeth are called deciduous teeth or baby teeth, and when the child reaches five or six years old, begin to fall to make way for permanent teeth. So, between five and thirteen years, live in the mouths of babes both types of teeth, until there are none left milk.

These teeth are very important because they allow the baby-and child first after-chew food and eat well, have a nice smile and a normal appearance of the face, and learn to speak and pronounce words correctly.

In addition, the teeth are those who keep the space for permanent teeth then grow strong and healthy, and allow the latter to have a healthy bud appearance or, in due time. For example, if a baby tooth decay (which can be caused by sweets and sugary drinks), then it can fall and leave an empty space that can be closed. Then the child will need a special device that does not happen and keep the place for the permanent tooth that has to appear and grow later.

And that’s not the only drawback. Although not fall, a decayed tooth can cause injury to replace it, that when the time may appear blotchy or weakened, for example.

Back and Neck Relief From a Chiropractor? Denver Chiropractors Can Help

A recent study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported that chiropractic care utilized to manage neck pain experienced by veterans resulted in successful pain reduction for the majority of the veterans treated with consistent chiropractic care.

The researchers in the study evaluated 54 cases where veterans experiencing and complaining of significant neck pain received treatment at a Veterans Health Administration medical center.

Over 60% of the patients experienced significant and meaningful relief from their pain after receiving less than 9 chiropractic treatments. Those suffering from neck pain should seriously consider utilizing the services of a chiropractor. Denver Chiropractor Rene Oubre has experienced similar results; “Chiropractic care has always been effective for the relief of pain – acute and chronic – from injuries, surgery and repetitive motion. Most muscular and skeletal pain complaints can be helped with chiropractic care, and when combined with acupunture, symptom relief is often accelerated and enhanced.” Dr. Oubre stated.

Denver Chiropractor Dr. Rene Oubre also recommends exercise in relieving back pain.

While most people who suffer from chronic back pain are ideal candidates for chiropractic care. Adding exercise activities to chiropractor treatment have shown some additional limited benefits for those suffering from chronic back pain. Pilates and yoga are two activities that may contribute to back pain relief. Studies have shown with adults suffering from chronic lower back pain, 12 weeks of yoga led to a small but clinically significant improvement in their ability to perform everyday activities. Of course exercise is not a replacement for treatment from chiropractors. Denver chiropractor Rene Oubre can help you today if you are in need of chiropractic care.

Cosmetic surgery procedures are usually undertaken to modify or enhance body parts. They can make your breasts fuller or take you down a size or two if you’ve been amply blessed naturally. The can take the crook out of the nose and restore a balanced look to your otherwise perfect face. Don’t like the way your earlobes droop or the shape of them in general. Cosmetic surgery can give you the look you want.

Many of the more minor procedures are performed quickly and with a short healing time. Others, like major breast augmentation require more medically evasive procedures and require more time and money than most cosmetic surgery. Minor cosmetic surgery repairs however are done as an out patient and take less time to heal than a tooth extraction. Many cosmetic surgery clinics have an almost retail atmosphere and offer payment plans to fit your budget.

If you want to put that youthful smile back on your face but droopy facial muscles make it a chore, cosmetic surgery can work wonders in helping you put on that happy face again. Procedures for these and other cosmetic surgery repairs are becoming more commonplace and less expansive as the procedures become easier and there widespread acceptance makes them affordable. New laser tools and chemical compounds are making cosmetic surgery as easy a choice as teeth whiting and dying your hair, almost.

When it comes to surgical operations, people rarely have the option to choose their surgeon. In most of the cases, these operations come as the result of an emergency.

Schizophrenia requires a combination of treatments, including medication, psychological counseling and social support.

The main drugs used to treat schizophrenia are called antipsychotics. They are quite effective in treating the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, but relatively less successful for negative symptoms, except for a type of medicine (see clozapine). Each person reacts differently to antipsychotic medications, so a patient may need to try several medications before finding one that works best.

If a drug works, it is important to continue taking it even after symptoms improve. Without medication, there is great probability that each episode psychosis recurring back and could be worse.

Antipsychotic drugs are divided into an older group (“typical”) and a new group (“atypical”). In recent years, has shown that in general, a group is more effective than another. In addition, differences between drugs in each group. It is impossible to predict which drug is most favorable for each schizophrenic. Therefore, finding the best balance between benefits and side effects depend on a process of trial and error wise.

Newer medications include risperidone (Risperdal), olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (Seroquel), ziprasidone (Geodon) and aripiprazole (Abilify). Some of these drugs can cause significant weight gain, which increases the risk of developing diabetes or cholesterol.

Other antipsychotics such as Chlorpromazine (Thorazine) and haloperidol (Haldol) are as effective as newer agents. Side effects can be minimized by using a low dose. As these older drugs sold as generics tend to be cheaper too. The disadvantage of these drugs lies in the risk of muscle spasms or stiffness, excitement, and if the medication is taken for a long time, the risk of developing involuntary muscle movements (called dyskinesia).

Other side effects of antipsychotic drugs include feeling sedated, slow, unmotivated, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleeping, dry mouth, constipation or changes in blood pressure.

Clozapine (Clozaril) is the only antipsychotic that is effective not only for positive symptoms, if not for the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. However, it has potentially dangerous side effects. About 1 in every 100 people taking this medication lose the ability to produce white blood cells needed to fight infection. Anyone who takes this medicine should be regular analysis of blood cell count. Other side effects include changes in heart rate and blood pressure, weight gain, sedation, excessive salivation and constipation. On the positive side, people do not develop muscle stiffness or involuntary muscle movements as seen with older antipsychotics. In some people, clozapine may be the best overall treatment for the symptoms of schizophrenia, so these people could decide if the potential benefit is greater than the risks.

Because other disorders can mimic symptoms of schizophrenia or may accompany it, could be tested other medications such as antidepressants and mood stabilizers. At times, some anti-anxiety medications to help control anxiety or agitation.

There are signs that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can reduce symptoms of schizophrenia. CBT in schizophrenia is not performed in the same way that CBT in depression. When treating schizophrenia, the therapist places special emphasis on understanding the patient’s experience, develop a partnership and find alternative explanations for psychotic symptoms distressing to disable this effect.

In addition to the specific techniques of CBT, the therapist or case manager provides emotional support and practical constant education about the disease, advice on managing relationships and orientation to reality. It may be emphasized to maintain motivation and problem solving. All these efforts will help the patient to continue treatment. The longer reliable and the ratio, the more useful it becomes for the patient with this disease.

There is much interest in developing community programs that provide comprehensive support and active reach the schizophrenic and their families. The objective is to control the monitoring of treatment, strengthen the functioning and improve quality of life in general. The residential treatment centers can provide a safe place to live. Vocational rehabilitation provides some hope that the person can do some productive activity. A social program could give the person the structure, activity and opportunity to improve their relationship with others.

Schizophrenia is a lifelong disease. However, many psychotic conditions much shorter, so the presence of psychosis does not necessarily mean that a person’s life is a constant struggle. Moreover, the impact of the disease can be reduced by early and active treatment.

Prevention

There is no way to prevent schizophrenia, however, the earlier you detect the disease, the more likely to prevent the worst effects of the disease.

Schizophrenia is never the fault of the parents. However, in families where the disease prevails, it may be helpful to seek genetic counseling before starting a family. Family members often educated are more likely to understand more about the disease and provide assistance.

When To Call a Professional

Anyone who shows psychotic symptoms or have difficulty performing activities because of problems in their thinking should continue treatment. Although the vast majority of people with this disorder never harm themselves or harm others, there is increased risk of suicide or violence in schizophrenia, another reason to seek help. There are clear signs that early and consistent treatment leads to better results.

Furthermore, the relationship with a team of health providers increases access to new treatments as they become available.

Forecast

The prognosis of schizophrenia varies. By definition, schizophrenia is a chronic condition including persistent and recurrent psychosis and poor functioning. Life expectancy may be shortened even if the person moves away from relationships that contain it, if your personal hygiene or care of the person declines or reduced their ability to view leads to accidents.

However, active treatment, the effects of the disease can be significantly reduced. Probably a better prognosis if the main symptoms begin after age 30 if the disease onset was rapid. While an individual has worked better before the onset of the disease, the better the chance of recovery after treatment. The absence of a history of schizophrenia in the family is also a good sign.

The symptoms of schizophrenia are defined as “positive” or “negative.”

Positive symptoms:

- hallucinations (perceptions disordered) that could include any of the five senses, including sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.
- delusions (distorted thinking)
- distorted speech
- unusual or disorganized behavior

Negative symptoms:

- limited emotional range (“flat affect”)
- limited speech, indifferent with little expression
- disordered thinking accompanied by difficulty making logical connections
- problems to start or pursue activities aimed at goals
- Intellectual or cognitive symptoms are difficult to detect and include difficulty to retain and use information to organize or plan.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of schizophrenia may not be immediately apparent. Although you can usually tell at a doctor if a person has psychotic symptoms, schizophrenia can not be diagnosed so quickly. The clinician may need to see the person for months or years to determine if the disease pattern fits the description of schizophrenia. It is important to observe the course of the disease over time because the psychosis alone is not sufficient to diagnose schizophrenia.

There are many causes of psychosis. The clinician conducting the evaluation will consider several alternative diagnoses, including mood, medical problems or substance abuse. Specialists know that in cases of schizophrenia, brain function is disabled, but tests that study the brain activity are not sufficient for diagnosis. The clinician may want to perform tests such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or electrocardiogram (EEG), which measures electrical activity. These tests will help rule out causes other than symptoms of schizophrenia, as a tumor or a seizure disorder.
