Doctors treat infections with antibiotics. In most cases of uncomplicated pyelonephritis, the antibiotic can be taken orally (by mouth), and treatment usually lasts 10 to 14 days. Commonly used oral antibiotics include trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim and others), ciprofloxacin (Cipro) or levofloxacin (Levaquin), but the choice of antibiotic depends on its history of allergy and laboratory analysis of the bacteria that cause infection. Once the full course of antibiotics, your doctor may ask another urine sample to see if the bacteria are gone.

If you have high fever, shaking chills, nausea and vomiting, dehydrated and could probably be unable to take oral antibiotics. In this case, may require hospital treatment so they can put antibiotics intravenously (into a vein). High fever and shaking chills could be signs that your kidney infection has spread to your bloodstream and can spread to other parts of the body.

If your doctor is concerned that you might have an obstruction (such as kidney stones stuck in the ureter) or a structural abnormality in your urinary system, it may request tests such as computed tomography (CT) or ultrasound.

When To Call a Professional

Call your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of pyelonephritis (particularly fever and flank pain), with or without urinary symptoms, especially if you are pregnant.

Forecast

Rarely, a single episode of uncomplicated pyelonephritis cause permanent kidney damage in healthy people. However, repeated episodes of pyelonephritis may cause chronic kidney disease (prolonged) in children, people with diabetes and adults with structural abnormalities of the urinary tract or nerve diseases that disrupt the function of the bladder. Pyelonephritis can become a chronic disease if infection can not be eliminated quickly, like a person with kidney stones or other developmental abnormality of the urinary system.

Most patients with uncomplicated pyelonephritis find that their symptoms begin to improve after one to two days of antibiotic treatment. However, even after symptoms improve, generally prescribed a full course of antibiotics for 10 to 14 days.

Prevention

To help prevent pyelonephritis if you had previous episodes or are at risk of having it:

- Drink several glasses of water per day, the liquid stops the growth of bacteria that cause infection to flush your urinary tract. Water also helps prevent kidney stones, which may increase the risk of pyelonephritis.

- If you’re female, wipe from front to back, to prevent the spread of intestinal bacteria and skin from the rectum to the urinary tract, women should always wipe with toilet paper from front to back after bowel movements.

- Reduce the spread of bacteria in sex: women should urinate after sex to flush bacteria from the bladder. Some women who have frequent urinary tract infections after sexual intercourse may take antibiotics before having sex to prevent infection.

- If there is a structural problem with the urinary system, such as obstruction by a gallstone or a developmental abnormality, surgery may be done to restore normal urinary function and prevent future episodes of pyelonephritis.

The two major symptoms of pyelonephritis are pain in the side, the area just below the ribs on the lower back, and fever. The pain may spread along the coast to the lower abdomen. There may also be shaking chills, nausea and vomiting. Urine may be cloudy, with traces of blood or unusually strong odor or smell. You may feel the need to urinate more often than normal and micturition (urination) could be painful and annoying.

Diagnosis

If your doctor is concerned about his kidney infection, it will ask if you have other health problems, previous infections, and recent symptoms. Monitor your vital signs (temperature, heart rate and blood pressure), and press your abdomen and sides to see if there is tenderness near the kidney. In women, symptoms of pyelonephritis could be similar to those of some sexually transmitted diseases, so the doctor may recommend that you do a pelvic exam.

To diagnose pyelonephritis, your doctor will ask you to perform analysis of urine for blood banks and an analysis of culture to determine the type of bacteria causing the infection. Usually, the doctor also will order blood tests. The blood is sent for culture analysis. People with pyelonephritis may have bacteria in the blood as urine. Antibiotics are being taken before the results of the analysis of culture and change the dose once the bacterial species identified in 24 to 48 hours.

Pyelonephritis is a kidney infection (the kidney) is usually caused by bacteria that reach the kidney by a bladder infection.

Women have more bladder infections (also called urinary tract infections) than men because the distance to the bladder from the skin where bacteria normally live, is shorter and direct. However, the infection usually remains in the bladder.

A woman is more likely to develop pyelonephritis when she is pregnant. Pyelonephritis and other forms of urinary tract infections increase the risk of preterm delivery.

A man is more likely to develop the problem if your prostate is enlarged, a common condition after age 50. Both men and women are likely to develop pyelonephritis if they have any of the following conditions:

- Untreated urinary tract infection
- diabetes
- nerve problems that affect the bladder
- kidney stones
- bladder tumor
- abnormal reflux of urine from the bladder into the kidneys, called vesicoureteral reflux
- obstruction related to an abnormal development of urinary tract

Tests or interventions to insert a device into the bladder also increase the risk of urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis.

Children sometimes develop pyelonephritis because of an abnormality in the bladder that cause reflux of urine into the urethra, the connection between the kidney and bladder. This can cause scarring of the kidney.

Rarely, pyelonephritis is so severe that can be fatal, especially in the elderly or people with deficient immune system.

This follows from the balance of the program 2003-2011 which was presented to the Ministry of Health, during the course of the day “decisions, rights and wishes. Advances and challenges in sexual health policy and reproductive health.”

The report noted that in 2006, 78% of hospitals and health centers were offering sexual and reproductive health, a proportion that rose to 93.1%, according to the last record made in late 2009.

Paula Ferro, National Program Coordinator for Sexual Health and Responsible Parenthood, said that the national plan “implemented in 2003 after a year before the enactment of the law that gave birth, put in place a genuine public policy.”

Ferro said that “it is give and convey the tools to prevent cases of unwanted pregnancies in the playing field and watch the rights of all to a sexual health.”

Since 2003, the program distributed to hospitals and health centers hormonal contraception injection and breastfeeding, IUDs and condoms. These methods were included in the 2004 Compulsory Medical Plan (PMO), which works for social and prepaid cards are also required to ensure that their members without charge.

Meanwhile, two years later, with the Surgical Contraception Law joined the tubal ligation and vasectomy as permanent contraceptive methods which all are entitled, without restrictions from 18.

In turn, in 2007 by ministerial decree incorporated the emergency hormonal contraception over the past year, rapid test for pregnancy.

“The program meant to give a concrete response to women in situations of unwanted pregnancy,” and reaffirmed “the commitment to advance the rights of sexual and reproductive health,” said Guillermo Gonzalez Prieto, Deputy Secretary of Community Health.

Diana Conti, Member of the Front for Victory (FPV), argued that the law sought to Sexual Health “to equal a right as the health and sex life by preventing unwanted pregnancy.”

The challenges in a document released also referred to further deepen the knowledge and tools so you can have universal access to sexual and reproductive health, which means make it a reality for all.

The BMA called for extending the existing restriction on smoking in public places, after reviewing evidence of the dangers for aspiring second-hand smoke, appropriated the agency Ansa.

The experts indicated that levels of toxins in a car can be 23 times higher than in a smoky bar. Meanwhile, a report of a multi-party group of MPs and peers said they should also be considered non-legislative options to resolve the issue.

The Group Health and Anti-Tobacco government also said that demand an immediate ban can be “counterproductive”, saying it must first be achieved in the population consensus before taking action.

The lawmakers indicated that they will launch a consultation on how to solve the problem of smoking in private cars, including from prohibition to education campaigns about the dangers to smoke.

The diagnosis of impetigo is essentially clinical. Bacteriological tests can be useful but not essential. If done, will take place from the contents of a blister. The identification of the organism to adapt the treatment and subsequent monitoring.

How is impetigo?

The treatment must be rapidly effective because of its contagious nature. Without treatment, impetigo often recurs. Generally used local and general treatments simultaneously.

local treatment

It is essential for healing. It consists of softening of the crust by serum zinc oxide, etc.

- Local antiseptic applications: currently preferred modern antiseptics, colorless, for their activity against different microorganisms mixed and that do not mask the lesions.

- Local antibiotics (mupirocin, fusidic acid) cream or ointment.

It should also seek entry doors (wounds) and the regions colonized by microorganisms, and perform a careful hygiene with a nail brush several times a day.

General treatment

Antibiotics are used orally for 7-10 days. (beta-lactams or macrolides).
